Red brass sheet is cut (by me, of course!) into a roughly-shaped lily pad. It’s edges are filed & sanded smooth, and the entire leaf hammered for texture, strength and shape. Thick lengths of lightly brushed sterling silver are securely soldered to the back of the leaf. They are slightly bent and filed at the ends, then hammered for strength.
A lovely subtle verdigris patina is painted on most of the leaf and left to dry for a few days before being sealed -front & back- with a clear glossy enamel. The result is an aged, mossy grey-green color, each of which is complete;y unique to the next because of the unpredictable nature of the verdigris patina. Vintage yellow brass flowers and white jade bring dimesion, color, and interest.
This comb is a “facinator”, and for decorative purposes only. It will not hold hair unless the hair is quite thick & abundant, so hairpins are recommended to keep your hair up. Slide the comb in place, close to your scalp to finish off your look.
Leaf measures approx. 2.5″ in diameter, and the lengths of sterling approx. 2.25″ long.
*PLEASE NOTE that I only use solder that does NOT contain lead or cadmium in my soldered pieces, and a natural non-toxic pickle to clean the metal after using the torch. All of my raw metals (wire, sheet, etc.) are recycled/reclaimed metal. When oxidizing, I also use liver of sulfur. No harsh chemicals.*
